The Divine Comedy

Old News, it is a museum after all

Although you may have heard otherwise nobody was jailed in Kentucky for practicing their religion, however someone was jailed for using a governmental position to impose their Religion on others.

The museum wonders how loud the shouts for “Religious Freedom” would be if a member of the Westboro Baptist Church became a County Clerk and stopped issuing marriage licenses to anyone who had been divorced. Well, a certain religious martyr in Kentucky would not receive one, that’s three times for sure.

Right now there is a statute on the books in North Carolina that allows a Muslim County Magistrate to opt out of doing any civil services for Jews and Christians. Religious Freedom is a multi-edged weapon, but no matter how it is wielded, if it is used in Government, you then become a theocracy. Maybe we should look at theocracies and see if we would like to become one.

We don’t have to look very far, at this very web site in fact, for while producing an excellent graphic novel, it also goes out of its way to point out the problems encountered by the citizens of Theocracies in the Middle East. While painting with a, to be kind, broad brush, it does show the problems associated with that type of governance.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition, but in theocracies it is the norm rather than an isolated incident.

But let’s look closer to home at Americas own fore fathers. I give you the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600s. Capital Crimes in the legal code that the Massachusetts Bay Colonist established were in order; Idolatry, Witchcraft and Blasphemy followed by Murder, Poisoning and Bestiality. After the severe winter of 1691-1692 which were obviously the result of evil forces since Global Cooling was a myth*, a Religious Freedom Fest followed in which over 200 witches and wizards were named, the youngest five the eldest nearly eighty. Fortunately the Church, backed by the power of government, was able to exorcise itself from the Devil, this State Sponsored Terrorism taking 20 lives of the 190 formally arrested with 4 more dying in jail, for in those days you had to pay for your food and upkeep in jail and if you couldn’t you were not released.

It seems to me that Kim Davis has more in common with Mombutae of Kaliste then Frank Clayton of the once floating isle. Yet we will add her to our list of heroes, along with the petty criminal Cliven Bundy, and the brave School Administration and Police Force of Irving, Texas, for it takes a lot of clay nowadays to mold the pedestal of true heroism.

Final Exhibit: The Founders wisely separated Church and State: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” How can the First Amendment be malleable while the Second Amendment is graven in granite? But more importantly do we really want to become a Theocracy and descend to the level of ISIS?

* The Earth cooled off from an interglacial warm period, for what has been called a mini-ice age starting about 1300 and ending in the late 1800s. During this time there were three cold peaks at 1650, 1770 and 1850. Winters were indeed cold in New England in 1692, and since there were no facilities at Miami Beach for snowbirds at that time, maybe witchcraft was the logical conclusion, that or a vast Liberal conspiracy to undermine the Freedoms of Man which were in part to be codified some 95 years later, that part being White Males.
